I decided to become a stay at home Mom when our first son was born. It is an awesome decision and I love it.
Before Keegan arrived in 2010, I quilted in my free time. I did some long arm quilting for other people. I also played around making quilts for myself and family. I really enjoy quilting.
I still did some quilting activities with Keegan. Keegan attended quilt guild meetings. I was even crazy enough to help do the quilt show section of the Big Sky Quilt Retreat in March of 2011. When Dillon (our new son) arrived in 2012, I had backed off most quilting commitments to other people.
I was just dabbling in quilting and not really feeling like I was accomplishing anything. I guess I don't feel like I have to accomplish anything except having kids that seem to be doing well (I am sure I will mess them up - isn't that what parents are for?) but it did feel like I was putting quilting on the back burner. I would say "I can do that again in 5 years when the kids start school." I realized if I did that, I would have a lot of quilting stuff to physically move once we moved Keegan's and Dillon's bedrooms rooms downstairs.
One day I read Cyndi St. Charles' blog cynthia-stcharles.blogspot.com where she wrote about her New Year's resolution that she would complete 100 foot squares with approximately one finished per week. I thought that was an awesome idea. I knew that I wouldn't finish an item per week but I thought my goal could be to complete one item per month.
I thought I should complete one item per month to keep me quiting and doing something fun for myself. The reason for the word COMPLETED in my variation of Cyndi's idea is that I like to start things but not finish. I see something else new and fun and get to thinking about the new project instead. I put the previous project in a box (so it is easy to move from one room to another) and start on the new project. It would be a great help to my fabric stash, and moving things around in the house, if I actually finished something.
I do have a lot of UFO (un-finished objects) so completing one item per month should be an attainable goal. We will just have to wait and find out.
