Friendship Quilt - #23 March

I participated in a friendship block exchange quilt.  Most of the twelve ladies that participated were from Laurel.  The project is headed by Sue W.  They did an exchange last year but I did not participate because I did not think I would be able to actually get any sewing done with the boys so young.  Luckily, for me, they kicked one of their "friends" out of the exchange and allowed me to be in the exchange this year.

We used the Midnight Posies pattern by Morning Glory Quilt Designs.  I did one of the tulip blocks for the exchange.  I did the block in the suggested colors.  I also did the block in oranges and yellows.  I let the "friends" select which block they wanted.

The pattern suggests applique flowers around the border.  Instead of appliqueing flowers, I thread painted flowers into the border.  Thread painting is really dense.  It make my borders wave a bit.  Not as bad as I had anticipated, but the borders still wave.  I did try to do background quilting that was more dense than normal but it was not even close to thread painting density.

I did thread fusion on the blocks in orange thread.

The photo above is the quilt hanging at Trackside Quilting during the Friendship quilt show.

Tribal Heart - #22 - February

I wanted to do a heart something for my fellers.  I had the idea of scraps sewn crazy on the bottom with a heart with a spiral on the inside on top.  When I did a search on the internet, I found Tribal Heart.  I liked the way it looked even better than my spiral idea.

Dale received the blue heart:

Keegan claims his favorite color is purple so he received this heart:

Dillon received the yellow heart:

I started with Dillon's heart - the yellow heart.  I used the sewing machine to applique stitch around the yellow.  Then I realized that was unnecessary.  I was quilting so densely that I did not need to applique too.

I have an orange heart for me waiting to be quilted.

Row By Row

Linda J.'s exchange was the row I received this month.  The suggestion in the paperwork was to use orphan blocks to make a row.  I have been using all of my orphan blocks in the backings of my quilts.  I did not have any of my own orphan blocks.  Thankfully, I had orphan blocks in Iretta H.'s fabric that I collected last fall.  I had to take apart a row that was partially completed then insert yellow between the sections to complete my row.

The row on top is Linda's row.  The row on the bottom is my row that I completed using Iretta's orphan blocks.

Row by row and other exchanges do get me out of my comfort zone.

Dog Beds

Three more dog beds were created from the scraps that I have been collecting this month.

I hope the dog pound likes them.

Day Guild Blocks

I am still completing day guild blocks for the exchange.  I have not been keeping track of how many I have completed since I presented my block.  I am supposed to complete 12 blocks before I present a block of my own again.

At the last few day guild meetings, they have mentioned that our exchange blocks quilts are supposed to be completed as the program for the May meeting.  If I get on the ball, I could have my quilt completed.  I haven't started on it yet though.  It is the brown strip sets that I am planning in which to insert circles.

Additionally, for day guild this month, we were asked to complete a President's block.

Other than following the pattern, the other requirement was to include pink somewhere in the block.

Modern Block Exchange Blocks

All of the modern blocks are selected from the Modern Blocks book compiled by Susanne Woods.  The modern block exchange is done through Four Winds Quilting.

One of the participants is a batik purist and she is creating each of the blocks in batiks for herself.  She will end up with a sampler quilt when this activity is completed.

Feather Fancy

I created a third Feather Fancy.  It is a gift for Mom for Christmas.  It was supposed to be given to Mom in December of 2013.  It did not get finished until February though.  I am getting closer to getting things completed on the deadline.

A white backing worked much better to keep the front looking white when quilted.
